in Iwamizawa for the first time, and revealed that
P. nigromaculatus
primarily dispersed via agricultural canals connected to paddy fields rather than larger natural rivers. Smaller canals facilitated species movement, whereas rivers posed potential barriers. Detailed eDNA analysis and visual observations in two adjacent paddy lots—one with an open-ditch system and the other without—demonstrated that frogs likely entered from the irrigation canals. The open-ditch lot supported a population due to continuous inundation even during midseason drainage, whereas reduced water levels in the conventional paddy lot restricted long-term microhabitat use. In contrast to the invasive species, the native Japanese tree frog
Dryophytes japonicus
was not detected by eDNA in the open-ditch lot, reflecting a habitat segregation of the species. These findings support the important role of agricultural canal networks and connectivity between rivers, canals, and paddy fields in driving amphibian invasions, offering critical insights into the conservation and control of invasive species.

abstract = {Abstract Wetlands play an essential role in the global greenhouse gas budget via carbon dioxide sequestration as well as methane emission. In recent decades, solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has been recognized as a remotely sensed proxy of gross primary productivity (GPP), which generates substrates for methane production. To examine the suitability of SIF for estimation of these two fluxes, we conducted ground tower‐based SIF observation with an ultrafine‐resolution spectroradiometer in conjunction with eddy covariance measurement in a cool‐temperate bog. The daily SIF retrieved in the red (687 nm) and far‐red (760 nm) bands (SIFred and SIFfar‐red , respectively) increased nonlinearly with GPP and linearly with absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR). The relatively weak correlation between apparent SIF yield (ΦSIF = SIF/APAR) and light use efficiency implied that both APAR and plant physiology constrained the SIF emission in this wetland. The SIFred /SIFfar‐red ratio showed a significant negative relationship with vegetation greenness indices, and the similar seasonal variation in SIFred and SIFfar‐red indicated that the SIFred reabsorption effect only weakly influenced the SIFred –GPP relationship. Episodic temporal reduction in the water table did not distinctly influence SIF and ΦSIF. Estimation of the methane emission rate was subtly improved by incorporating SIF, which was substituted for GPP as the methanogenesis substrate, in a multivariable regression analysis together with two environmental factors: soil temperature and water table depth. This study illustrates the potential of both SIFred and SIFfar‐red to monitor GPP and to predict methane emission in wetlands. },

abstract = {This study established a planning framework for effective small‐scale urban wetland restoration by adapting an analytical template used for watershed‐scale projects. We evaluated the optimal water ponding scale and location for small urban wetland restoration. We calculated the achievable water ponding area in Oyama Wetland, Hokkaido, Japan, by the use of an artificial water supply and elevation differences without reliance on precipitation. The volume of infiltration into the sediments, a component of the water balance equation, was estimated during a temporary suspension of the artificial water supply, and the estimate was then validated by modeling the decrease of the water ponding area from 2008, before the introduction of the artificial water supply, with high reproducibility (Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency = 0.68). The estimated attainable water ponding area was 1172 m2 . We identified where a water ponding location could be most efficiently established through principal component and cluster analyses of groundwater level observation data collected from 2008 to 2010. Areas with high groundwater levels (first axis) and stable groundwater levels (second axis) accounted for approximately 73% of the cumulative contribution ratio. The calculated potentially achievable ponding area was consistent with the area achieved by the actual wetland restoration. This study shows how efficient and safe restoration of urban wetlands can be achieved with a dataset that volunteers and others can obtain independently. Long‐term data analysis using the adapted template allows for clear identification of discrepancies between desired reference conditions and current conditions, facilitating the setting of objectives that promote long‐term monitoring. },
